Big East Results: Round 1

Virginia Tech 61 Rutgers 58- With the help of an 18-3 run at the start of the second half, Virginia Tech advances to the second round against top seed Pittsburgh at Noon on Thursday.

During the fateful early second half run, Rutgers committed seven turnovers and made just one of twelve shots. The run countered the 15-3 Rutgers run at the end of the first half, which put the Scarlet Knights up 35-27 at the half. A final 9-1 run by Rutgers in the game's final two minutes was ended when Rutgers guard Calvin Wooten threw up an air ball three point attempt with one second left in the game. Virginia Tech was led by Coleman Collins with 12, while star Bryan Matthews and Markus Sailes chipped in with 12. Rutgers was led by Marquis Webb with 19 and Ricky Shields with 16. Rutgers dropped to 16-12 and await an NIT bid. Virginia Tech, now 15-13, faces 27-3 Pittsburgh who they lost to 78-59 in the regular season.

Boston College 68 Georgetown 57- The Eagles won their sixth straight and ninth of their last ten to raise their overall record to 22-8, and a date Thursday afternoon with Syracuse. Star forward Craig Smith scored 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Jared Dudley added 12 for Boston College, while Uka Agbai and Jemaine Watson joined their teammates in double figures, with 11 and 10 points respectively. Georgetown also had four players in double figures led by Brandon Bowman with 14. Ashanti Cook had 13, while Gerald Riley and Matt Causey added 12 a piece. Georgetown lost their ninth straight game to drop to 13-15, while having their run of 24 straight quarterfinal appearances snapped. Syracuse (21-6) beat Boston College in their only meeting this season, 96-73, at the Carrier Dome.
