It certainly didn't limit him enough for coaches in either sport to notice him. In basketball, he averaged over 21 points and 12 rebounds per game, and is good enough that he is being recruited by St. Joseph's. In football, he has already received offers from Syracuse, North Carolina State, and West Virginia. But Coach Sonon says that's only the beginning.
"I think Northwestern and Penn State are about to offer. He is hearing from pretty much all the schools in the Big 10, the ACC, and the Big East," says Sonon, who added, "Pittsburgh just asked for tape on him."
Newell hasn't been timed in the 40 yet, but his basketball skills show what a great athlete he is.
. "We don't time them in the 40," says Sonon. "We wait until they go to a combine or camp."
And once he concentrates on football his 250-pound bench press and 300 squat will surely go up. But what if he plays basketball instead?
"No, I don't want to do that," says Newell. "I'm going to play football."
Newell, who Sonon calls "very quiet and humble", will attend the Nike Camp at Penn State in May. He also has a 2.9 GPA.
So what lucky schools are on Newell's initial list?
Let the battle begin for PA's best two sports star.
