Pittsburgh hosts Blue Chip day

Head Coach Walt Harris and the University of Pittsburgh coaching staff hosted Blue Chip day on Saturday, April 3rd. Many of the top recruits from the Pennsylvania, Ohio, and D.C. areas, among others, were represented at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex.

As the recruits arrived they were treated to a scrimmage, where they got to see first hand what college football is all about. After the scrimmage concluded, recruiting coordinator Bryan Deal led the recruits and their families to the locker room areas. After a brief discussion, the players were taken to the weight room for a presentation by strength and conditioning coach Mike Kent.

The players and families were then escorted to the team meeting room where Coach Deal gave a presentation about the ACT/SAT, the scale and discussing eligibility. He then answered questions about recruiting.

The players were separated by position at each table. The recruits ate lunch with various members of the team. Some of the players in attendance included Tyler Palko, Luke Getsy, Tim Murphy, Ray Kirkley, Vince Crochunis, Dan Stephens, Ty Gilliard, Mike Phillips, Josh Lay, Steve Buches, Erik Gill, Rob Petitti, Joe Delsardo, Derron Thomas and Clint Session. During lunch, everyone was treated to the 2003 Panther highlight video.

After lunch, head coach Walt Harris introduced himself, his staff and the current players who were there. The recruiting rules were gone over about visits and phone calls and how everything is conducted.

After coach Harris's speech, he introduced seven players who would take part in a Q and A discussion with the recruits and their families. During the discussion the coaches left, so it was the families' chance to ask any questions they had without feeling like the staff was influencing any answers. The players who took part in the discussion were QB Luke Getsy, QB Tyler Palko, DT Vince Crochunis, DT Dan Stephens, FB Tim Murphy, CB Mike Phillips, and S Ty Gilliard.

After the discussion, the recruits boarded buses for a tour of the campus and the Petersen Events Center. At the "Pete" the families were given a presentation by Mike Farabaugh the Director of Academic Support Services. After the tour, it was back to the UPMC facility for some closing remarks by Coach Harris. Some of the recruits in attendance included:
