Looking to live up to uncle's nickname

Back in the 80's with the Miami Hurricanes and then in the 90's with the Dallas Cowboys, Michael Irvin earned the nickname "The Playmaker". Now in 2004 his nephew is looking to add his own chapter to the family football saga.

WR Cedric McGee, 6-2.5, 180, 4.5 Plantation High School, Plantation, FL, credits his uncle Mike for keeping him grounded.

"He's a great influence on me, he teaches me how to run and condition my body, and he makes me work out daily, and always makes sure I'm keeping my grades up."

Cedric McGee, who had 18 receptions for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2003, has offers from Pittsburgh and Auburn. His top five includes: North Carolina State, Miami, FSU, Pittsburgh, and Tennessee. Cedric has taken unofficial visits to Miami, and plans on attending the FSU spring game and taking in some Miami practices. He was to attend the Nike Combine at Miami on Sunday; he will most likely camp at Pittsburgh and NC State this summer. He is currently on the Colonels' track and field team running a leg on the 4x400 relay team the high, and long jumps.

What does Cedric see in his top five that attracts him to those schools?

NC State - "There are several players on my high school team who like them, and they have a nice campus."

Miami -"My uncle Michael Irvin played there. I had a nice time when I visited."

FSU - "They were my favorite team growing up."

Pittsburgh - "Darrell Strong was my QB and he's going there, they also have HB Blades and Nick Williams from Plantation. I really like the coaches, I like that they have showed a lot of interest in me. The fact that they throw so much really attracts me."

Tennessee - "They were another team I followed growing up."

Were you shocked when you were offered so early?

"Auburn surprised me, they came from nowhere."

So you weren't shocked about Pittsburgh offering?

" I knew they'd offer, every time they'd call and talk to Coach Helper, they told him they liked me a lot."
