Another Pennsylvania player with Panther ties

A lot of publicity has been given to the fact that there are several recruits this year with ties to the Panther family. The Panthers are actively recruiting the quartet of John Brown, John Pelusi, Zack Anderson, and Mitch Morsillo. Brown has already given Pittsburgh a verbal commitment to attend the university. Pelusi and Anderson have been offered scholarships to play for head coach Walt Harris and the University of Pittsburgh.

Another name to add to the mix is Riverview High School OG Shane Steffy (6-3, 290, 5.3). Shane helped lead the Riverview Raiders to a record of 5-5 in the very competitive Eastern Conference in the Class A WPIAL League. Shane's brother Charles was a walk-on defensive tackle and lettermen for the Panthers from 1999-2002. Shane's mother is an employee of the University of Pittsburgh.

Shane has been to Pittsburgh twice for junior day programs. He has also visited Marshall, and will visit Akron and former University of Pittsburgh offensive coordinator JD Brookhart this coming weekend. Trips to Kent State and Ohio University are also in the works for Shane and his family.

Steffy has been invited to attend the Nike Combine at Penn State. He may also attend Metro-Index and A-K Recruiting camps as well. This summer he will most likely camp at Pittsburgh and Ohio University. The 1st Team Eastern Conference All-Star is a solid student with a GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. He has scored 1080 on his SATs. He holds his own in the weight room as well, with a 325 lb. bench press and a 500lbs. squat.

What are Shane's goals for the 2004 season?

"I want to improve myself and my abilities, and play as good as I possibly can."

Despite his family ties to Pittsburgh, Shane still is weighing all his options.

"I would like to earn a scholarship. The MAC schools are nice. I like them. Pittsburgh is my favorite, but I am going to see what other's have to say."

Shane's favorites at this time are Pittsburgh, Ohio, Marshall, Akron, and Miami-OH
