Panthers add WR to class of 2004

The University of Pittsburgh has added two Wide Receivers since LOI day this year. Andre Broussard a speed burner from Wilkes Barre, Pa and now Jason Gaffney (6-3, 185, 4.45) Laney College in Oakland, California. Jason took official visits to Michigan State and Pittsburgh before deciding on the Panthers.

Jason Gaffney was a Football, basketball, and track star at Hayward High School in Oakland. He earned 1st Team All-City honors in football, and was named to the 1st team All-HAAL. Academics led Gaffney to Laney College and Head Coach Stan Peters.

During the 2001 season the explosive Gaffney earned several post-season honors including All-Region II, All-California 1st team Offense by the California Community College Coaching Association, and he was also named 1st team All-California by

The fast rising prospect entered his sophomore season at Laney with high expectations. During a game against Santa Rosa College Jason caught 21 passes. In the middle of the season Layne was playing West Valley when Gaffney caught a pass and took it 55 yards down field before being pushed out of bounds. During the play he was pushed in a piece of speaker equipment and suffered a season ending Lateral Collateral Ligament tear. The game was early in the 2nd quarter and Gaffney had already amassed 7 receptions for 153 yards.

Despite missing a big part of the 2002 season Gaffney finished with 45 receptions for 700 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was named to the All-Golden Gate Conference 1st Team and was named as an Honorable mention All-American by JC

Gaffney is currently taking part in workouts at UPMC. His knee seems to be healed from the surgery; he is running at full speed. The big test will be after the contact starts to see if the knee holds up. The will have an interview with Jason soon.
