The Panthers defeated UAB 24-6 Saturday to finish the season with a 6-5 record which earned them an invitation to the Tangerine Bowl against the Wolfpack. The Bowl berth was a nice reward for a team that at one point was 1-5 and its season looking dismal. Pitt turned it around and won 5 straight games with the most impressive victory being over then #12 Virginia Tech. Pitt Finished the regular season with a 4-3 record in the Big East, Tied for 3rd with BC and VT. NC State finished the season with a 7-4 record and they beat then #10 Florida ST. 34-28 and lost a close game with #9 Maryland, 23-19. This will be the 3rd bowl game in 5 seasons for coach Walt Harris. That is pretty impressive when you consider Pitt was losing games by scores like 72-0,66-0 and 55-0 before Walt arrived. This bowl invitation should really help with recruiting and also give our younger players the much-needed extra month of practicing to get the team ready for the 2002 season. This gives Pitt back-to-back bowl trips for the first time since the 1982-1983 seasons! Pitt has an 8-12 all-time record in Bowl games.
