Thursday Night Clash Huge For Pittsburgh

Thursday night at 7:00 PM on ESPN 2 the Panthers play UCONN on the big stage. Air Force and Navy will be aired at 7:30 on ESPN, but the attention will be on the deuce. Recruits all across the country will be sitting in their living rooms watching intently. UCONN is (3-1) with victories over Duke, Army, and D-1AA Murray State, Pittsburgh is (2-1) with wins over Ohio, and D-1AA Furman.

With all of the negative media Walt Harris has endured this season this could be his chance to get over the hump, at least for the time being. The Panthers will come into tonight's contest as 7-point underdogs to a team that was a D-1AA team not so long ago. Last fall Pittsburgh was in position with a win over Miami to secure a spot in the BCS, less than one year later most fans feel as if the program has reverted back to its doormat status it had through the early to mid 90's.

Pittsburgh was ranked the #9 team in the country last year in most preseason polls. My how a matter of months changes the landscape of college football. The excuses have been plentiful and the results have been less then expected. The Panthers have showed a tremendous amount of character battling back from adversity in consecutive weeks to almost upset Nebraska and rally for a victory over Furman.

Tonight in front of a national audience Walt Harris could achieve vindication, or it could be another failed opportunity to get the program where it thrives to be at. A Panthers victory could provide its recruiting efforts with a much-needed shot in the arm; a loss could be very detrimental for many years to come.
