Local lineman decides to stay home

Despite rumors about the university's head coach, Pittsburgh is doing well as they received verbal commitment No. 14 this morning. We have suspected it would happen for a few weeks and today he pulled the trigger and made the decision. Read on to find out who is the newest Pittsburgh Panther recruit.

Coraopolis (Pa.) Moon offensive lineman John Bachman, 6-4 and 260 pounds, has struggled with his college choice. Bachman had committed to Indiana and head coach Gerry DiNardo. The Hoosiers then fired DiNardo, forcing Bachman to look elsewhere. It did not take long as Bachman chose the school where his heart was in the beginning. Bachman has committed to the University of Pittsburgh today.

"I called at 10:45 am this morning," said Bachman "I called coach Junko and gave him the news, he was pretty excited."

Pittsburgh has its own coaching problems right now as Walt Harris continues to be mentioned for other jobs. Is Bachman feeling as if he may be entering another Indiana type situation?

"I am just happy right now, Pitt is where I really wanted to be," said Bachman "No matter what happens with coach Harris, Pitt will still be Pitt, it's still a great school, the team will still be the same no matter what."

Last night when you called me, you had said you were going to sleep on it, what were your thoughts this morning?

"When I woke up it just felt right and I knew what to do, and what direction to go."

Are you going to take and pro-active approach and try to get some of the WPIAL talent to join you at Pittsburgh?

"I'm going to do what I can, I plan on talking to Sean Lee and see where he stands for sure. There is a great young team at Pitt right now; we can build something special there.

After deciding to change your mind about Indiana, deciding on Pittsburgh, what was your parent's reaction?

"They're happy, they just want me to get a good education. Pittsburgh is close to home so everyone can come see me play. They are real happy."

Bachman was originally scheduled to take an official visit to Akron this weekend, have those plans changed?

"I cancelled the trip, I am done for sure, no more recruiting."

Bachman started for his entire four-year career at Moon high school, earning All-Conference honors each season. Bachman is the fourth WPIAL player to verbal to Pittsburgh this year joining Burrell's John Brown, Aliquippa' Tommie Campbell, and Valley Forge and Hopewell grad Craig Bokor. Bachman will take his official visit to Pittsburgh (12/17)
