The Panthers finished up the recruiting season by signing a 23 player recruiting class that Walt Harris called solid, balanced and full of potential. Pitt did an excellent job in filling its four most pressing needs. They were wide receiver, kicker, quarterback and linebacker. Not only did Pitt fills those needs, but also they filled them with highly ranked players. At wide receiver, Pitt brought in Larry Fitzgerald, who is considered one of the top 15 Wr's in the country per Max Emfinger and Prep Atlantic.com.
Pitt landed another WR recruit from the JUCO ranks in Princell Brockenbrough. He is considered by many as the top JUCO WR in the country. A 3rd WR recruit is Billy Gaines, who ran the fastest 40 times at any Nike Camp last year with back to back 4.25 40's!!! At Quarterback, Pitt landed High School All-American Tyler Palko who is considered by every recruiting guru to be one of the top 10 QB's in the entire country. The Panthers also brought in QB Luke Getsy, who had an outstanding High School career and totaled 6,021 yards passing and 59 TD's! Pitt also needed to bring in a kicker and they brought in David Abdul who is rated a top 5 kicker in the nation by Prepstar, Student Sports and Rivals.com. Pitt filled their needs at Linebacker by bringing in 3 outstanding recruits in Azzie Beagnyam, Brian Bennett and Charles Sallett. Azzie is ranked by Max Emfinger as one of the top 24 LB's in the country. Brian is rated a 4-star recruit per Insiders.com, and Charles Sallett may be the most impressive of the three right now on film. Other players who received national press include Tight End Steve Buches, who made Max Emfingers All-American team and RB recruit Jawan Walker who was ranked among the top 30 WR recruits in the country. But as you know, many times the best players turn out to be the ones who were not the highest rated recruits, and all of Pitt's incoming recruits have the potential to be top players. Most recruiting guru's rank this Pitt class 4th in the Big East behind Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College. There were some disappointments with some top local players selecting other schools, But the WPIAL really only had 6 top ranked players, (Palko,Farris,Breaston,Buches,Borgoyn and Getsy) and 3 selected the Panthers. An overall comparison of player rankings from this years class to the last 2 years before by Insiders.com and Rivals.com does show the average ranking of a Pitt recruit in this years class to be higher than the last two years prior. Still if Pitt wants to climb to the next level, they will need to continue to improve their recruiting efforts. This was a all around good class, that filled the Panthers biggest needs very well.
