Panthers offer Syracuse standout

Central (N.Y.) was kind to the Panthers on signing day as they inked Paul V. Moore running back Irvan Brown and Henninger athlete Doug Fulmer. Now the Panthers staff is courting and has offered arguably the top defensive player in Central (N.Y.) Mackenzie Mathews.

After receiving four verbal offers from Alabama, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Pittsburgh, Syracuse (N.Y.) Christian Brothers Academy defensive end McKenzie Mathews, 6-2 and 240 pounds, has received his first written offer.

"Pittsburgh offered me an official written offer," Mathews said. I was excited, glad to see it in the mail. The school is an up and coming football program and they should do well in the Big East next year."

The Pittsburgh coaching staff features two coaches with ties to the Syracuse area in running backs coach David Walker, and Grad Assistant Jeff Ambrosie. Ambrosie is actually an alumnus of Christian Brothers Academy.

In 2004, Mathews tallied 50 tackles, 10 for a loss, 12.5 sacks, and he blocked three kicks. He earned All-Central New York honors for his efforts.
