Jackson Lists Pitt Among Leaders

Morgantown (W. Va.) linebacker Cory Jackson (6-1, 240, 4.7) has full rides from Stanford (first to offer) and Maryland.

"Right now those are my only two offers," said Jackson, from University High School. "The schools that I like right now are both Stanford and Maryland, as well as West Virginia, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Nebraska.

"I'm still interested in a lot of schools out there, but right now both Stanford and Maryland have an edge on the other schools that I like. The schools that haven't offered me have seen my tape and are very impressed with it from what I've heard.

"I've been to Tennessee, Pittsburgh and West Virginia unofficially so far. I was looking to get out to Maryland for their camp this past weekend (6/4), but I got a bad case of poison ivy from mowing my yard at home. I'm going to get out there for camp though sometime between June 16-26 because they also have camps then. I don't know if I'll get out to Stanford this summer, but I might be able to go see Pittsburgh and Ohio State," he said.

"With coach (Walt) Harris being Pitt's coach last year, he pretty much knew of the area around here. I know he heard about me last year when I took in a Metro-Index camp, and when he went out to Stanford, he still remembered my name. He told me that he loved what he saw on my tape.

"Stanford has some great academics and they only lost to USC last year by three points. They compete in a really good conference. I hear the area around the campus there is great, and that they've probably got one of the best campuses in the country," he said.

"Maryland has always been West Virginia's rival, so getting an offer from them is kind of weird for me. It sounds like they've got a nice program over there though, and the coaches that I've spoken with from there all talk really highly of head coach (Ralph) Friedgen. They seem to want me more as a fullback though.

"Ohio State also seems to like me as a fullback and West Virginia seems to want me as a linebacker. I don't have a preference on the either position. I really like defense and being able to hit people hard as a linebacker, but I also think that the fullback position is ideal for my height and weight.

"That's what I think is holding up West Virginia from offering me. I think they still need to evaluate me more at both positions before they settle on an offer. They seem really interested in me and some of the coaches from there have been by my school already. I've also been to some of their football games.

"Stanford has made it pretty clear that they want to get me on campus and see me in action before they figure out where they'll need me the most," he said.

"I've got some great strength. I mean I'm real good at just being able to bull people over. I'm always one of the hardest hitters on the field and nobody ever really pushes me around. I want to work on my footwork and getting my forty time down."
