Guru Grill: Your Stop For Inside Pitt Athletics

Hello fellow Panther fans, it's time for The Guru Grill. This is where Panther fans come to get the answers to their questions regarding University of Pittsburgh athletics and recruiting from Scout.com Recruiting Analyst Bob Lichtenfels.

Our staff would like to thank you for your participation and in making our site the number one source for information regarding Pittsburgh Panther athletics and high school recruiting.

1. tbro34: I know alot of big name programs are starting to show alot of interest in Kevin Collier. Do you think are chances are still high with this prospect?

  • Guru: I see it coming down to Syracuse and Pittsburgh for his services

2. chris94: Has Pitt officially offered Navorro Bowman? If not, why (he's rated the #15 LB in America)? Grades an issue? Any chance Pitt looks at him at other positions?

  • Guru: Pittsburgh got a late start in MD/DC, they did well shoring up the homeland but it cost them in other regions. Pitt has shown interest but have not officially offered as of the last time I spoke to Bowman.

3. Puckyinz: Where do we stand with some of the Florida players we've offered??

  • Guru: Florida kids are not usually early commits, like it or not they usually wait until they see if one of the Big 3 offers before they decide what they'll do. Kellen White states that he wants to leave the state so we'll see what happens. Pitt seems to be excellent shape with Dexter Davidson.

4. williemakit: How many scholarships does Pitt have for 2006? ?

  • Guru: My guess is around 17-18 from what I can tell right now, obviously there's things that can change that, they signed more then most of us thought they would last year.

5. tbro34: If Kevin Smith and Justin Hargrove have phenomenal seasons, will Scout.com increase their star rating accordingly?

  • Guru: I think Kevan Smith will move up a lot, Hargrove has the talent to be one of the top 10-15 players in the state, obviously due to injury we cannot rank him as such right now but without a doubt both players rankings can improve. Our rankings are an ever changing and ongoing process. .

CaptainH: Any word on the elusive Marlon Terry??

  • Guru: The last I had heard he would likely end up at Akron, I am currently trying to confirm that.

7. steeler11: My Son is a wide receiver and I saw him throwing with a Strong Armed QB by the name of Marshall I read he is from Pa. and has some offers. He threw with my son at the Pitt and UVA camps, I was wondering if he had an offer from Pitt and if not why?

  • GURU: Matt Marshall I would assume you're talking about. I don't believe he has an offer from Pittsburgh. My guess is they like others a little better Pat Devlin, Dexter Davidson, Thaddeus Lewis, and a few in-state kids like Desmond Brentley and Connor Dixon could be wild-cards.

8. Edubb: I see that Lyons is not being recruited for whatever reasons and I was wondering if there were any underlying reasons why Pitt is not pursuing McCrae, or are they? I know he is on almost everybody's top 50 lists for the state of PA and he does have some offers. What is the story?

  • Guru: Pitt is deep at wide receiver; McCrae is a nice looking kid whose stock has risen dramatically since last season. One bad thing about recruiting is you can't take them all. I think if McCrae plays this season like he performed this spring he'll receive some bigger offers.

tbro34: Elijah Fields claims a top three of Pitt, WVU, and OSU. He's quoted in a recent Scout.com article, "I'm kind of waiting to see what Ohio State will do." Does this mean he is Ohio State's to lose?

  • Guru: I look at Fields like I did Dickerson it wasn't if as much as it was when. He and Shane Brooks are the best of friends and no matter what that often will lead to the prospect choosing that particular school

williemakit: Of the remaining scholarships Pitt has to offer, from a position standpoint, how do you see the rest of the class shaping up?

  • Guru: Come on Wille, I answered this last week. You must have been on sabbaticle

bear071562: Is Kevin Collier as good as everybody say's he is? Is he anywhere near the caliber of back as McCoy

  • Guru: Collier is a tremendous talent, but McCoy is on another level.

Azuldos: What are the requirements for a kid to be freshman eligible? What can be done for kids that may do well in the classroom but not so well on the SAT's?

  • Guru: www.ncaa.org, there are far too many variables for me to mention here. There are all kinds of programs out there to aid a prospect with test taking.

tbro34: Is Kevin Collier as good as or better than the running backs we already have?

  • Guru: That's not really a fair question, there's no answer that I could give that would be right. Once Collier suits up in college and plays a game we can discuss that.

Williemakit: Who are the top remaining targets for the Panthers? What are the chances with these guys?

  • GURU: Wille, Wille, Wille your killing me. I also answered this one last week.

CaptainH: Nate Hartung is listed on the Big 33 roster as undecided on college/university. Any chance of a walk-on?

  • Guru: Nate is taking a two-year Mormon mission that's why he's listed as undecided.
