Guru Grill: Your Stop For Inside Pitt Athletics

Hello fellow Panther fans, it's time for The Guru Grill. This is where Panther fans come to get the answers to their questions regarding University of Pittsburgh athletics and recruiting from Scout.com Recruiting Analyst Bob Lichtenfels.

Our staff would like to thank you for your participation and in making our site the number one source for information regarding Pittsburgh Panther athletics and high school recruiting.

1. GepDawg: Who looks like they will end up as the starting FB: Collins or Murphy? Who do you think should be the starter?

  • GURU: Tim Murphy has proved his value as a back; no one ever questions his desire or ability. The problem with Tim has been his ability to stay healthy. I would think he starts out as the fullback, unless the young RB's falter. Collins is a stud, and he will be breathing down the back of whoever is starting, it would surprise me to see him get reps and eventually win the job.

CaptainH: What do you believe are Pitt's chances with the following prospects: (QB) - Thaddeus Lewis, (RB) - Kevin Collier and LeSean McCoy, (OL) - Chris Hanna and Daniel Wenger, (DB) - Darrin Walls, Aaron Berry, Ricky Gary, (WR) John Maddox, Tamarcus Porter and Aaron Smith.

  • GURU: I can't see them taking three QB's so that pretty much would eliminate Lewis. I see Collier as a Panther. McCoy who knows what he's thinking. Hanna I see him going to Illinois. Wenger if he take's an official maybe, but it's a reach. The ND game could be a big deal for the Panthers and their chances of landing Walls, but this could come down to a battle against Michigan. Gary I figured would commit on his visit, but the last time I spoke to him his family was trying to talk him into waiting. Berry liked his visit, but they all do at first. Smith I believe will be a Panther. Porter it will depend, if Smith commits they may not have room for Porter. Maddox is playing the process out slowly and figuring things out.

PittFan7: Are there any recruits for the class of 2007 (Pitt interest) that stand out to you?

  • GURU: Josh Marks, Pat Bostick, Cody Endres, Rob Gronkowski, Toney Clemons, Evan Blankenship, Jon Ditto, Jordan Mabin, and Steve Paskorz to name a few.

NJBob: With Williams failing to qualify, will this help us with some of the top CB prospects we're involved with? Who will be future Panthers out of that group?

  • GURU: I don't think it will really have an affect on anyone. See CaptainH's question on potential prospects above.

GepDawg: What are the chances of Bryan Williams ever playing for Pitt?

  • GURU: If it's a JUCO situation, I would say slim. If he can prep then there's a possibility. .

Pittfan78: Anything new on the recruitment of Eric Latimore or McKenzie Matthews? Where do the Panthers stand with them?

  • GURU: No new developments in either's recruitment, nor a change in where Pitt stands for either

tbro34: How do you feel about our current (2006) offensive line recruits?

  • GURU: Joe Thomas is very good; I think he'll do well. Rodemoyer is a warrior type kid who will maul with anyone. Corson has the size and frame, and possesses outstanding feet. He is raw though right now.

tbro34: In your opinion, who else do we have to pick up in order to have a successful offensive line recruiting class?

  • GURU: A Jeff Otah would help, Wenger would bean unbelievable get for Pittsburgh. They need tackle's

Chris94: Where do we stand with OL prospect Javon Hill?

  • GURU: Pitt needs tackles I'm not sure a Javon Hill is the answer for what they need.

Chris94: Why hasn't Pitt offered Ohio's Dominic Alford?

  • GURU: he didn't do real well during camp, he's a kid they may follow this season and then possibly offer, but again they need tackle's

PittFan7: What does next years WPIAL class look like?

  • GURU: I think it will be outstanding again, maybe better then this year, depth wise.

GepDawg: Will LaRod Stephens really be a RB this year? What are his chances of being Pitt's nickel DB?

  • GURU: LaRod is a weapon, I really think they'll find a way to get him involved in the offense in some way. Remember J.J. Moses and what he did to Pittsburgh at the Insight.com Bowl?

"In Your Grill" Question of the Week:

AZPitt: The ND game is a key game to the program. Do you feel the outcome and atmosphere will push us over the edge with any key recruits? Who?

  • GURU: It very well may, a few kids like Jared Martin and Ricky Gary could decide that day. I'm sure other recruits will see the game on TV, I'm guessing it will be a sell-out, the College Game day atmosphere can't hurt. It's a big game for both programs.
