Gattuso visits Smith

The University of Pittsburgh would like to add at least one more defensive end prospects to their outstanding 2006 recruiting class. One of the fastest prospects on their radar screen happens to be Blake Smith (6-ft-3 ½ inches, 230 pounds) from powerhouse Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD.

"Coach (Greg) Gattuso was at my house last Thursday," stated Smith. "He told me that Pitt is still keeping a close eye on me."

Blake Smith visited the Panthers in early December (12/9). He has received scholarship offers from Kansas State and Akron. Smith will take official visits to Akron next weekend (1/13) and Kansas State the following weekend (1/20).

"Kansas State and Akron are coming after me hard. Pitt and Illinois seem like they are very close to offering me a scholarship. Coach Gattuso told me that Coach (Dave) Wannstedt has talked about me. He wants to recruit speed and I'm a speed rusher."

Smith registered 128 tackles, 18 sacks, 2 recovered fumbles and 2 forced fumbles this season. Pitt tapped into Eleanor Roosevelt High School several years ago to land starting outside linebacker Derron Thomas. Blake is capable of running a 4.6 forty-yard dash, bench pressing 365 pounds and squatting 545 pounds.

"Coach Gattuso told me to stay patient. They are waiting to see how things fall into place with their scholarships. Hopefully they will offer. I loved my visit."
