Porter pleased with final decision

The University of Pittsburgh amassed one of the top recruiting classes in the nation. Tamarcus Porter (6-ft-1 inches, 180 pounds) from Pahokee High School in Pahokee, FL was the last player to sign with Pitt. He talks to the PantherDigest.com about the delay in his final decision.

"I was happy to get the recruiting process over. I'm happy to be with the Panthers," stated athlete Tamarcus Porter.

Porter accrued nearly 30 scholarship offers. Scout.com ranks him the 62nd best safety in the nation. Tamarcus, nickname "TJ", waned named first team All-Florida Class 2B as a utility player. He was also named first team all-area and all-district.

Tamarcus committed to the Panthers less than a month ago. The Panthers coaching staff assumed he was a solid commitment until he decided to re-open his recruitment two weeks later and visit Wake Forest.

When asked about his indecision, he stated, "This was a big decision and I guess I just wanted to make sure I saw all of my options. I always liked Pitt and my commitment really never changed. People wrote that I de-committed from Pitt. I never did that."

Porter gathered 53 receptions for 797 yards and scored 11 touchdowns on offense this season. He was just as impressive on defense accruing 37 tackles and 6 interceptions. Pahokee High School finished the season with a 12-2 record and was the Florida Class 2B runner-up.

"Pitt has told me I might get time on both sides of the ball but my first looks are going to come at wide receiver," he said. "I know they signed some good wide receivers, but I don't mind the challenge. I have seen film on some of those guys and I feel I'm just as good. I plan on getting onto the field. If they think I can get onto the field quicker at safety, I don't mind moving to defense."

Porter joins fellow class of 2006 wide receivers Dorin Dickerson from Imperial, PA, Elijah Fields from Duquesne, PA and Aaron Smith from Monoreville, PA. He is capable of running a 4.5 forty-yard dash. Tamarcus is a solid student with a 3.0 grade point average.

Tamarcus won't be the lone prospect from Pahokee, FL matriculating at Pitt. He is joined by his teammate and second cousin Ricky Gary. Porter and Gary are diametric opposites. Tamarcus is quiet and reserve. "Sticky" Ricky is brash, confident and extremely verbose. Will this odd couple co-exist in college? "Yes, we're good friend and we will probably room together. I'll let him to do all the talking!"

"Pitt fans may not know this, but I'm the one that got Ricky interested in Pitt. He committed way before I was ready. He was really happy to know I sent in my letter of intent."

"I plan on working on out and focusing on my grades. I can't wait to get to Pitt. My goal is to be named the Big East Freshman of the Year. "
