Pitt amongst finalist for Smith

Tyler Smith (6-ft-7 inches, 220 pounds) from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA is considered the 3rd ranked prep school player in the nation. With one scholarship left to give, Head Coach Jamie Dixon and staff would like to add this talented player to their class of 2006.

"Tyler is having a great year for us," stated Hargrave Military Academy Head Basketball Coach Kevin Keatts. "He's averaging around 21 points and 10 rebounds a game for us."

Tyler Smith was considered one of the top players in the class of 2004. He originally singed a national letter of intent with Tennessee. Tyler's plans drastically changed after the Volunteers underwent a coaching change. He immediately decided to attend Hargrave Military Academy and reopen his recruitment.

"I would say that Tyler is primarily down to Pitt, Iowa, Kentucky and Memphis. He may take another visit when our season is over next month. The staff at Pitt has done a very good job recruiting him and I know the Panthers are very high on his list. He likes them quite a bit."

Last year the University of Pittsburgh ventured to Hargrave Military Academy to successfully recruit power forward Sam ‘The Man" Young. When asked to compare Young to Smith, coach Keatts responded, "They are similar with a few differences. Sam and Tyler are both warriors. They give you everything they got each and every game. Both of them are absolute warriors. Sam is a bit more physical and more of an inside presence. Tyler is a little bit more of a perimeter presence. Both players are tough defenders."

Scout.com ranks Smith the 12th ranked small forward in the class of 2006. He has already visited Pitt (11/11/05), Iowa (12/16/05) and Memphis (1/27/06).

"Tyler would make a great Big East player. Pitt could very well land him in a month. He should have a decision by the end of March or beginning of April. He simply has to sit down with his family go where he feels most comfortable. Tyler loved that atmosphere at Pitt."
