Panthers lead for NY safety

The University of Pittsburgh recently added two of the top players from the state of New York when defensive end McKenzie Mathews and running back Kevin Collier joined Pitt's 2006 recruiting class. It appears that the Panthers are once again leading for a top prospect from the same state.

"Pitt, Syracuse, Connecticut, Nebraska and Penn State are some of my favorite schools," stated safety prospect Stefan Gage (6 foot, 180 pounds) from Henninger High School in Henninger, NY. "I would have to say that Pitt is my favorite right now."

Gage registered 52 tackles (31 solo) and 5 interceptions last season. He has been a two-year starter at safety. Stefan is capable of running a 4.55 forty-yard dash and bench pressing 240 pounds.

"Pitt has (red shirt freshman defensive end) Doug Fulmer from my school. We have talked about the Panther program. He told me they value you as a person, not just a football player. After everything he's said, I would like to take a closer look at them."

Gage was hoping to attend the Panthers' junior day but he has a basketball game scheduled on the same day. He assumed the that he will attend Pitt's summer football camp.

When asked to describe his strengths, he stated, "I play with great intensity and I'm a leader on and off the field. I'm the type of player people look up to. I love to hit. I take pride in hitting hard and being an intimidator on the field."

"I want to go to a school that will provide me with a good education and take care of me as a person. Doug told me Pitt was that type of school. I can't wait to visit there."
