Penn Hills TE excels at combine

University of Pittsburgh Offensive Coordinator Matt Cavanaugh often likes to utilize the tight end in his offense system. It appears that Pitt will attempt to add at two tight ends to the class of 2007. Penn Hills High School in Pittsburgh, PA happens to have one of the better local prospects.

"I'm open right now, but I like Pitt, Notre Dame, Iowa, Miami (FL), Florida State and Virginia," stated athletic tight end prospect Derek Drummond (6-foot-5 inches, 210 pounds). "I attended junior days at Pitt, Akron and Notre Dame. A lot more schools have invited me to their junior days. Syracuse and Miami (FL) are two of them."

Drummond was a first-year starter at tight end last season. He strictly was considered an offensive player. Things will change for his senior season. It appears he will be a two-way starter at tight end and outside linebacker.

"I weighed in at 203 pounds at the (Scout.com) combine. I have lost some weight. Coaches have told me my forty-yard dash time might dictate whether I end up a wide receiver or tight end. I have the frame to add plenty of weight."

Drummond ran the forty-yard dash in 4.6 seconds over the weekend. He scored two touchdowns from his tight end position last season. Derek is capable of bench pressing 260 pounds and squatting 300 pounds.

"I like to think of myself as a tight end that can get down field and make the tough catch. I'm looking for a school that will offer me a chance to play early and feature the tight end in their offense. I'm a solid blocker but my blocking will get better after I gain some weight."

Publishers' Note: Drummond is a player to keep an eye on. I was shocked to hear he weighed 203 pounds. He is very tall and has broad shoulders. I assumed he weighed close to 225 pounds. He looked like a muscular small forward. The sky is the limit for this prospect if put into a regimented weight training program.
