Miami Center on Dixon's radar

The University of Pittsburgh basketball program has added to players to its recruiting class of 2006. Head Coach Jamie Dixon has one remaining scholarship to give. It appears he is paying close attention to a big man from Miami, FL.

"Luis transferred to our high school from Montverde Academy and he's set to play for us this season," stated Dr. Krop High School (Miami, FL) Head Basketball Coach Marcos "Shaky" Rodriguez. Coach Rodriguez was referring to 2006 center prospect Luis Colon (6-foot-10 inches, 260 pounds).

"There are a number of schools interested in him. South Florida, Pittsburgh, Miami, Cincinnati, Florida and Florida State are just some of them. Pittsburgh hasn't offered but they seem very interested in him."

Colon recently was named the MVP of the Senior Showcase All-Star boy's basketball tournament in Orlando, FL. The event is a showcase for many of the top basketball players in the state of Florida.

"Luis averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds a game. He also blocks about 5 shots a game. His defense has really improved. He's become a force."

Coach Rodriguez was quick to point out several of his strengths. "He's a big, muscular player that lives in the paint. He won't drift away from it too much. Luis will give you points in the paint. He's a solid foul shooter as well. Most big men struggle with fouls shooting."

Colon is close to qualifying academically. He is set to take the SAT within the next two weeks. Luis needs to score a 900 or above to fully qualify.

"I think schools are waiting to see if he qualifies. I don't think he's going to have a problem. If all goes well, I expect a number of schools, including the Panthers, to come after him. He's too good a player to remain unsigned. It's not that easy finding quality big man.
