Smith, a highly athletic native of Brooklyn, NY, averaged 18 points and 7 rebounds last season. He is considered one of three high-major prospects on the Laurinburg roster. Kiwan's teammates Saiquon Stone and Phil Jones have accrued interested from schools throughout the Big East, ACC and Atlantic 10.
"Right now it looks like Tennessee is pursing him the heaviest," stated Reid. "Pittsburgh, UNLV and Providence are also involved. I believe they are waiting to see how he does academically. If his grades are in order, the sky is the limit. He may the most athletic player I have ever coached."
"Kiwan has improved on and off the court. He has really worked hard in the classroom and I believe he will qualify. His game has improved as well. He remains as athletic as ever, he can score on the break and his jump shot has greatly improved."
Basketball scouts often stated that Smiths' main liability was defense. He was considered a strong offensive player in dire need of refining his defensive skills. When Coach Reid was asked about Kiwan's efforts on the defense, he stated, "He has really improved. I knew he needed work when he first came here and he has really improved."
Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon and staff have clearly designated Tyler Smith from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA as their primary prospect. If Smith opts to go elsewhere, Kiwan Smith remains a strong option.
"We'll know soon if Kiwan is going to qualify. It wouldn't shock me if Pittsburgh gives him a stronger look."
Tyler Smith Update
The PantherDigest.com has been inundated with requests for updates on small forward Tyler Smith. Hargrave Military Academy Head Basketball Head Basketball Coach Kevin Keatts was contacted yesterday for an update on Tyler's status. He is down to four schools: Pitt, Iowa, Kentucky and Memphis. It appears that Pitt and Iowa remain his leaders. Coach Keatts indicated that little has changed and no specific decision date has been given. Scout.com ranks Smith a ‘four star' prospect and the 12th ranked small forward in the class of 2006.
