Pitt first to offer powerful DT

University of Pittsburgh Head Football Coach Dave Wannstedt is in the process of rebuilding the Panthers' defensive line. He, along with his staff, has been searching for tough, physical players from the state of Florida. It appears they have discovered a powerful prospect from Miami, FL.

"Pittsburgh and Minnesota were the first schools to offer me a scholarship," stated powerful defensive tackle Uriah Grant (6-foot-1 inches, 260 pounds) from Everglades Academy in Miami, FL. "I was really happy to get the offer from Pittsburgh. They offered me based on my performance at practices. I don't think they have seen me in a game yet. That meant a lot to me. It's something I'll keep in mind when making a decision."

Grant is a squat and athletic lineman with Herculean strength. He is capable of playing defensive end and tackle on the next level. Uriah is capable of running a 4.8 forty-yard dash, bench pressing 380 pounds and squatting an astounding 680 pounds. When asked to describe his legs, he stated, "Well, they are really big, like tree trunks."

"I'm looking for a school with solid academics, a good football program and one that will give me playing time. I want to get onto the field and play."

Uriah registered 60 tackles and 14 sacks as a junior. He was named 2nd team All-County. Grant has been a three-year starter for Everglades Academy.

"I bring a lot to the football field. I'm explosive off the line, I'm really strong and I'm smart. I have been playing the game so long, it moves in slow motion when I'm out there. I know where players are going and I can read them. Because of my strength and quickness, I can get by most offensive linemen. I frustrate them."

Squat and powerful defensive tackles with above average mobility are nothing new to the University of Pittsburgh. Grant has similar attributes to 2006 Panther recruits John Malecki (6-foot-2 ½ inches, 270 pounds) and Jared Martin (6-foot-1 inches, 290 pounds).

"Pittsburgh is high on my list. Their offer means a lot to me. I like Miami (FL), Georgia, North Carolina State and Maryland as well. I'm going to wait until the end of summer and see what offers have been made."

"Coach (Dave) Wannstedt is a good coach and Pittsburgh has an up and coming program. I want to learn more about the Panthers and hopefully visit in the future."
