Kyle Hubbard talks about his decision

The University of Pittsburgh ventured to St. Edward High School in Lakewood, OH to land standout class of 2006 offensive lineman Joe Thomas. It didn't take Head Coach Dave Wannstedt and his coaching staff long to venture back for more talent. The Panthers received a verbal commitment from standout tight end Kyle Hubbard on Sunday.

"The key for me was feeling comfortable," stated tight end/wide receiver Kyle Hubbard (6-foot-5 inches, 225 pounds) from St. Edwards High School in Lakewood, OH. "I live in Cleveland and Pittsburgh seemed a lot like it. It would be like playing at home away from home. I didn't want to wait any longer so I decided to call Coach (Dave) Wannstedt on Sunday night and commit to Pitt."

St. Edwards High School had a successful season with a record of 9-2. They are generally considered the top high school program in the Cleveland, OH area. Warren G. Harding High School recently defeated the Eagles in the regional playoffs.

When asked to elaborate on his decision to commit to the Panthers, he stated, "It seemed like a great fit. Like I said, I felt comfortable with the city of Pittsburgh, the school and the coaching staff. I get to play big time football and I may have a chance at early playing time."

Hubbard happens to be close and personal friends with Pitt true freshman offensive lineman Joe Thomas. It appears that Thomas developed into an excellent recruiter. "Joe is a big reason I'm a Panther," said Hubbard. "Joe raved about the Panthers facilities and academics. He talked about their practice facilities and Heinz Field. I'm really excited to see them. Right now it looks like I'll be visiting on December 1st."

Hubbard caught 40 receptions for over 500 yards as a junior. He was named All-District, All-Conference and second team All-County. Kyle is a solid student with a 2.8 grade point average.

Kyle chose the Panthers over offers from Minnesota, Kentucky, Kent State, Bowling Green and Akron. A number of Big Ten schools including Iowa and Wisconsin were in very close contact.

"Coach Wannstedt told me he was really excited about my commitment. They mostly recruited me as a wide receiver, but I might play tight end on certain situations. I'm 6-foot-5 inches tall and I have the frame to add weight."

Hubbard was the 16th player to join the Panthers class of 2007. He was primarily recruited by Panthers Defensive Coordinator Paul Rhodes.

"I think I bring a lot to the football field. I'm big, fast and I can block. I have no issues blocking or getting physical. My size makes me a match-up problem for defensive backs. I like to think I'm a smart player as well."

"I'm excited to get to Pitt and get started. I can't wait to get to Pitt in December and spend some time with my future teammates and coaches."
