Panthers target Maryland Big Man

The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball program recently finalized its 2007 recruiting class. Five outstanding players were signed to letters of intent. It appears that Head Coach Jamie Dixon and staff have wasted little time transitioning into 2008 recruiting. The puts the focus on a top 2008 prospect.

Two players recently attended the University of Pittsburgh's "Fan Fest" held on October 28th: shooting guard Sean Mosley (6-foot-5 inches, 185 pounds) from St. Francis High School in Baltimore, MD and forward Roscoe Davis (6-foot-10 inches, 215 pounds) from Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro, MD.

The contacted Dr. Henry A Wise, Jr. High School Head Basketball Coach (and former Georgetown Hoya) O.J. Johnson to gain perspective on his star forward Roscoe Davis.

"Roscoe is an outstanding talent with a tremendous upside," stated Johnson. "Right now we have him focusing on academics and nothing else. I have told him many times that you get your academics in order first and everything else will all into place. He's received interest from a number of great programs. A few of those are from the Big East including Pittsburgh."

When asked about Davis' thoughts on the trip to Pittsburgh, Coach Johnson stated, "He really enjoyed the visit and he likes the coaching staff at Pittsburgh. They will be a strong contender for his services." ranks Davis a "four star" center prospect. It appears he will play power forward on the next level. Coach Johnson was quick to provide his opinion on Roscoe's ideal position. "He's 6-foot-10 inches and 215 pounds right now," said Johnson. "He'll end up at power forward in college but he's truly skilled enough to play small forward. The best way to put it: Roscoe is a NBA small forward and a college power forward."

When asked about Roscoe's strengths, Coach Johnson replied, "He's has excellent size and length. He's very athletic for his size and versatile. He can play anywhere from the "3" (small forward) to "5" (center). Roscoe can run the floor extremely well and he has an excellent jump shot."

"I know how physical Big East Conference can be. If he ends up in the Big East, he's going to have to improve his strength. We lift weights twice a week right now and he's starting to add some good weight."

"It's early in the process but Coach (Jamie) Dixon has an outstanding basketball program and I know Roscoe is very interested."

Pitt has an excellent opportunity to add Davis to its 2008 recruiting class due to his connection with Pitt's director of basketball operations David Cox. The will continue to stay on top of his recruitment.
