Pitt "in play" with Jared Williams

City-League standout Jared Williams was one of the first players to commit to the University of Pittsburgh's 2007 football recruiting class. Shortly after his commitment, he stunned Panther fans by re-opening his recruitment. After a long and difficult senior season, Williams will give the Panthers a second look this weekend.

"We had a bit of a disappointing season," stated stocky cornerback prospect Jared Williams (5-foot-9 inches, 185 pounds) from Perry Traditional Academy in Pittsburgh, PA. "Our team was really young and it was tough to win games."

The Commodores produced a 6-5 record in 2006. Williams verbally committed to the Panthers in early May. He was one of the first players to join the Panthers 2007 recruiting class. In less than a month, Jared opted to re-open his recruitment. Virginia and Michigan State were expressing the most interest in him at that time.

"Although I de-committed from Pitt, they never stopped talking with me," stated Williams. "Coach (Bob) Junko has always been contacting me. Within the last few months, the contact has picked up quite a bit. I'm set to visit the Panthers this weekend."

Williams is capable of running a 4.5 forty-yard dash, bench pressing 300 pounds and squatting 360 pounds. Scout.com rates him a "two-star" player. A player with a "stocky" physique, Williams has outstanding closing speed and he's known as a sure tackler.

When asked if he still had an offer from the Panthers, he stated, "I have to talk with Coach (Dave) Wannstedt first before I'm offered. Hopefully I have one in place this weekend."

"I'm still talking with Iowa and Virginia but I don't have official visits set up with them yet. If I do make a decision, I have to sit down and talk it over with my parents first."

The Panther continue to pursue Williams' teammate and friend Cameron Holland (6-foot-2 ½ inches, 285 pounds). Holland, a rugged guard/center prospect, is a North Carolina commitment that visited the Panthers last weekend.

"I'm a shut down cornerback that watched a lot of film. I actually watch more film of myself to push me to improve."

"I look forward to the visit this weekend. We'll see how things turn out."
