2004 recruiting class full of Western Pa. talent

The 2004 recruiting class is looking to be one of the best local recruiting classes in Western Pa. in a long time. There are at least 5 players that will be ranked among the very best at their positions in the entire country! The top 5 right now look like...

1. Anthony Morelli is 6-4, 205 lbs and is considered a prototypical drop back QB. He threw for 1,056 yards and 9 TD's as a junior. He was already invited to the Elite 11 QB camp in California before his junior year in high school! Student Sports selected him as a High School All-American for his junior class. He is already considered one of the highest rated recruits in Western Pa. history! Many local coaches and recruiting gurus that have seen him in games and at camps compare his arm and release to Dan Marino! Anthony was selected to the Sporting News/Student Sports top 100 juniors in America list! He is entering his junior year of high school and already has offers from Pitt, Michigan, Purdue and Virginia. Anthony amazingly threw for 1,000 yards as a freshman and again as a sophomore in a primarily run oriented offense. Most feel the battle for his services will come down between Pitt and Miami, but he should have offers from every big time program in the country before his junior year is over.

2. A.Q. Shipley: 6-2, 260 lbs OL-DL, Moon Area High School Shipley made all-conference as a freshman and had a solid sophomore year. He lost 20 lbs since last season and is much quicker this season. He is a devastating run blocker and with his added speed should be a force on defense. He will start both ways this season. Is a two-time all-parkway conference selection. Shipley, who has offers from Pitt, Penn State and Michigan, will anchor both sides of the line. He also was selected to the Sporting News/Student Sports top 100 juniors in America list! He was one of only 10 O-lineman that made the list! I would rate him only behind Morelli locally at this point. He has the second most offers from big time schools at this time. He will start both ways this season, and is a two-time All-Parkway Conference selection. What is most incredible is that he was selected All-Conference as a freshman!!!

3. Andrew Johnson is a 6-0, 195 lb track star and football star from Central Catholic High School who will be able to choose any college he wants. Andrew was offered by Pitt as a sophomore, and Iowa has also recently offered. He attended the Miami, Fla. camp and was selected as the top running back at the camp. What is amazing is that Andrew missed almost 3 games as a sophomore and still ran for almost 1,700 yards! He had an average of 9.7 yards per carry! Andrew is good friends with Woodland Hills 2003 super recruit Ryan Mundy and Anthony Morelli. That may or may not influence his college decision. Andrew was selected by Street and Smith Magazine to its "50 Juniors To Watch" list. Only 5 Pa. juniors were selected to this list and he was the only one of this group to make that list. He has run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and he has added 10 lbs of muscle since last season. He also was selected to the Sporting News/Student Sports top 100 juniors in America list! Andrew said he has no favorite at this time but likes Pitt, Miami, Virginia Tech and Tennessee. He said his goal for this season is 2,000 yards rushing!

4. Cory Davis is a huge 6-4, 260 lb linebacker from Peabody High School in the Pittsburgh City League. Cory is huge and physical and actually covered WR's with no problem at camps this year! His size, speed and agility make him a rare athlete. Cory also is a two-year starter on the Highlanders basketball team!

5. Tyrell Sales of Butler High School is 6-3, 220 lbs and runs a 4.5 40! They are saying he is already the best linebacker at Butler in the past 10 seasons. Tyrell was named 2nd Team All-Conference as a sophomore! His coach said he is the best linebacker he's coached in 15 years, including a pair of Virginia Tech recruits at Peters Township.
