Camp Countdown Begins

A countdown for the Pitt football team to begin preseason training camp is in its final week, as the players are set to report Sunday, Aug. 5.

The University of Pittsburgh has 48 letterwinners returning for this season, including 15 starters. There are eight coming back on offense, six on defense and place-kicker Conor Lee.

Pitt will hold its annual media day session Aug. 6, while camp is set to run from Tuesday, Aug. 7 through Friday, Aug. 24. Third-year coach Dave Wannstedt will put the Panthers through double practice sessions on eight days and hold three intrasquad scrimmages.

After holding two practices per day from Aug. 7-10, Pitt will assemble in full gear for a Saturday, Aug. 11 workout. On Aug. 14, the Panthers will practice twice, but the later one will actually be a scrimmage beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Aug. 18 scrimmage gets under way at 10:45 a.m., while the Aug. 22 one begins at 3:30 p.m. All three scrimmages are at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Pitt has two practices on Aug. 16, its seventh such day in camp, but has just one two-a-day scheduled thereafter. The annual FanFest event is Thursday, Aug. 23, from 6-9:15 p.m. at Heinz Field. Camp ends Aug. 24 with a night practice from 6:30 to 8:30 at the UPMC Sports Complex.

The Panthers begin their regular-season practice week Monday, Aug. 27 and open the season with Eastern Michigan Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. at Heinz Field.
