Wannstedt held the press conference in the Pittsburgh locker room at Heinz Field where jerseys from recent recruiting classes adorned the area. The group included All-America middle linebacker Scott McKillop, who led the nation in tackles in his first season as a starter and will be a senior in the fall, and tailback LeSean McCoy, the Big East rookie of the year this past season.
"We felt that it was appropriate to introduce our 2008 recruiting class in the place where they will spend their Saturdays over the next four years,'' Wannstedt said. "Looking at the jerseys in these lockers, we have been fortunate to recruit some outstanding young men to the University of Pittsburgh. We believe this year's class fits that same exceptional mold.
"We recruited with specific positioning needs in mind, and I'm very pleased with the end result. This was a total team effort by our coaching staff, players and campus community. They all do a great job when it comes to recruiting student-athletes to Pitt, and our 2008 class is a prime example.''
Wannstedt's fourth recruiting class, his third straight rated among the 20 best in the nation by Scout.com, includes three U.S. Army Bowl All-Americans: wideout Jonathan Baldwin, linebacker Shayne Hale and offensive tackle Lucas Nix. Two-time all-staters in tailback Chris Burns and cornerback Jarred Holley. One of the most dangerous kick returners in WPIAL history, Cameron Saddler, and nationally ranked place-kicker Kevin Harper.
Two players from Pittsburgh Central Catholic's undefeated state championship team, quarterback Tino Sunseri and defensive back Andrew Taglianetti, the WPIAL Class AAAA player of the year also signed. And two junior-college players, center Robb Houser and quarterback Greg Cross, who enrolled at Pitt in January, officially signed as well.
Other members of the class include tight end Mike Cruz, defensive back Ronald Hobby, defensive back Antwuan Reed, wideout Mike Shanahan, linebacker Joe Trebitz, offensive tackle Ryan Turnley, tight end Justin Virbitsky and linebacker Manny Williams. The positions listed were by Pitt.
