Big East Releases Women's Schedule

PITTSBURGH — The Big East has released its home and away schedule for the 2008-09 women's basketball season, which includes a return trip with West Virginia – the only two-time league opponent of the season.

The format for league play is a 16-game schedule. Each team will play 16 conference games - seven opponents home only, seven opponents away only and one opponent both home and away, a repeat opponent. Each member will have a total of eight home and eight away games.

The Pittsburgh Panthers, who are coming off a program-best Sweet 16 season, will host Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Notre Dame, St. John's, USF and Villanova in addition to West Virginia. The Panthers will have a competitive home schedule as Marquette claimed the 2008 WNIT title, while Notre Dame also advanced to the Sweet 16 and DePaul and West Virginia were NCAA Tournament teams.

Pitt will travel to Connecticut, Georgetown, Louisville, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Syracuse and West Virginia. Last season, Connecticut advanced to the Final Four, defeating Rutgers in the quarterfinals, while Louisville advanced to the Sweet 16 and Syracuse was an NCAA Tournament team.

Last season, Pitt tied its school record with 24 wins (24-11) and earned a No. 14 ranking in the Associated Press poll, which was the highest in school history. The Panthers also defeated a school-record four ranked teams in 2007-08, all of which were in the top 15. In the end of the year USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, Pitt held a No. 16 ranking for its first postsesason ranking in school history.

The 2008-09 Pitt women's basketball schedule will not officially be released until late summer. Fans may call the Panther Ticket Office at 1-800-643-PITT for information on season tickets.
