Pitt Women's Track And Field

Several members of Pitt's women's track and field team returned from the NCAA Regional with top-15 finishes, as nine Panthers earned a chance to compete at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Regional Track and Field Championships at Florida State.

Leading the way with two top-15 finishes for Pittsburgh, senior Shantea Calhoun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) placed 11th in the 200-meter dash and 14th in the 100-meter dash. Her time of 24 seconds flat was just shy of making the mark for the finals, while her time of 11.78 was third in her heat of the 100-meter dash.

With the next highest finish, junior Mycaiah Clemons (New Kensington, Pa./Virginia Tech) was 12th overall in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles (13.88) after placing fourth in her heat.

Additionally, in the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Brianna Broyles (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) turned in a 13th-place performance with a season-best time of 59.48.

Also competing in the 200-meter dash mentioned earlier, senior Shanea Calhoun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) crossed the finish line fifth in the same heat as her sister for a 16th overall performance (24.08).

Shanea was also the lead leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished fourth in the third heat for a 16th overall finish at 45.58. Shanea was joined by freshman Da'Lynn Mills (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), junior Raquel Bender (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) and Shantea.

Later, junior Janessa Murphy (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) placed 17th in the long jump with a leap of 5.78m, while freshman Nicole Cherry (Utica, Pa./Franklin) launched the javelin 40.74m for 22nd overall.

Closing out the NCAA regionals was senior Amy Ruffolo (Wexford, Pa./Duquesne), who finished 29th in the 3000M steeplechase at 11:30.75.
