Shakim Phillips, a wideout from DePaul Catholic HS in Wayne, N.J. and T.J. Clemmings, a defensive end from Paterson, N.J. Catholic HS, traveled together to Pittsburgh. Clemmings worked out, but Phillips did not. Both are being recruited by Pitt secondary coach Jeff Hafley, who has the New Jersey area.
Phillips watched the practice session and talked with Dave Wannstedt, Hafley, Pitt wideouts coach Bryan Bossard and some Panthers players in attendance.
"I wanted to get down here to check things out and talk to the coaches and some players a little bit more,'' Phillips said. "I haven't had an opportunity to do that before, so I wanted to make sure I spent more time on that. And it went really well. Pitt has some nice facilities, excellent coaches and good players.''
Phillips has nearly 30 scholarship offers with Boston College, Maryland, Rutgers, Connecticut, West Virginia and Iowa joining the Panthers as leaders for his services. Phillips denies having a leader, and offers continue to come in for the nearly 6-foot-2, 200-pound speedster rated among the nation's top wideouts.
Clemmings is a beast at 6-6, 260 pounds already. He moves well laterally and displayed a quick burst coming off the edge in drills. Clemmings has nearly three dozen offers, but also claims no leader.
"I'm all over the place right now,'' Clemmings said. "Pitt was nice, but I'm going to take some more visits and see what happens.''
Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Rutgers join the Panthers as some of the top schools vying for Clemmings' talents.
