Arthur Doakes, who has projected as a guard despite being 6-foot-6 and 350 pounds, has offers from Rutgers, Syracuse and Troy to go with Pittsburgh. The Panthers expect to sign him in February, 2010.
Doakes has taken several trips to Pitt and worked with offensive line coach Tony Wise during the most recent camp visit.
"Pitt's offensive line coach, Tony Wise, he's a great coach,'' Doakes said. "I really enjoyed being taught by him. I really enjoyed that. I'm going to learn a lot from him.
"And all of Pitt's people really made me feel like one of the family there. I had a great visit. I saw all the campus, the football stadium and practice facility. It was a terrific experience for me.''
Doakes also visited Syracuse in June and attended camps at Michigan State and West Virginia, but the Panthers and Syracuse clearly stood out. So, Pitt basically beat out the Orange for his services.
For those wondering about Doakes' weight, he already has begun conditioning for his upcoming senior season and expects to be down to 325 when he hits the field this fall.
