Pitt Looks To Ohio In 2011, Too

Pitt's 2010 recruiting class has not yet been finalized, as the Panthers have 18 verbal commitments with seven spots still open.

Todd Thomas, a recruit from this year, is expected to enroll in January after spending the first semester at Milford Academy in New Berlin, N.Y. and should count toward 2010. So, that's why there are now 18 commitments.

However, Sept. 1 was the initial contact day for high school juniors needed to fill the 2011 recruiting class, and Pittsburgh reportedly sent out 25 letters to get the ball rolling. And at least four went to Ohio prospects, including cornerback Doran Grant, outside linebacker Trey Depriest, defensive end Steve Miller and cornerback Chris Dukes.

Grant and DePriest are the top two rated prospects in Ohio, while Miller is sixth. Each has four-star rating. The Panthers recruiting staff renewed the program's interest in Ohio this past year and secured 2010 commitments from tight ends Dan Schneider and Brandon Carozzoni, running back Andre Givens and offensive guard Matt Rotheram after signing no Ohio players in 2009.

In previous years, Pitt Coach Dave Wannstedt signed just place-kicker Kevan Harper in 2008 and tight end Kyle Hubbard in 2007. The Panthers got offensive lineman Joe Thomas and cornerback Jovani Chappel from Ohio in 2006 and cornerback Bryan Williams in 2005. Hubbard and Williams did not last.
