Prospect Recap : Week One

The season has started for teams in Ohio and the Maryland/DC area. Teams in New Jersey are scrimmaging for another week, before opening the regular-season on the weekend of September 10. Pennsylvania teams start up this weekend.

Deonte Gibson had three tackles and two sacks, helping Lakewood (OH) St. Edward to a 35-28 win over Mentor (OH) at Cleveland Brown Stadium on Saturday. Kyle Kalis, a 2012 offensive lineman, was instrumental in quarterback Kevin Burke rushing for over 100 yards and three scores, as well as running back Terrell Bates who finished just under 100 yards.

Also in Ohio, Pitt commit Justin Olack wasn't as lucky in his team's opener. Buchtel defeated Olacl's Washington, 29-13. Buchtell will take on Pittsburgh Central Catholic, this coming weekend, in the Rally at the Wolarena at Woodland Hills. Olack caught a six-yard touchdown pass in the loss.

Another Pitt commit--defensive end Max Issaka--had a couple of big scrimmages last week. In two scrimmages--one last Tuesday, and another Friday, Issaka finished with three sacks and a total of six tackles. Woodbridge will hold two more scrimmages this week, before opening the regular season on September 11 against Old Bridge.

Quinton Alston had two sacks and was in on several other tackles, in a tri-scrimmage with Princeton and Weequahic on Friday. Alston's Timber Creek team has one more scrimmage before opening aginst Cumberland Regional on September 10.

Jameel Poteat, in an opening scrimmage against Elizabethtown, rushed for 100 yards and three rushing touchdowns, in just eight rushing attempts. In his team's second scrimmage, against Manheim Township, Poteat rushed for 100 yards on nine carries, with two rushing scores. Poteat's Bishop McDevitt opens Saturday against Monroeville (PA) Gateway.

Ben Kline was in on a number of tackles, in his team's scrimmage against Delone Catholic. Dallastown opens the regular season Friday against Warwick.

Cincinnati (OH) Colerain cornerback Chris Dukes had three receptions for 36 yards, an interception returned for 17 yards, and a 53-yard kickoff return, in a 35-6 opening-win over Northmont.

Four-star defensive tackle Kevin McReynolds had a sack and six tackles for a loss, in a 24-7 loss to Calvert Hall. McReynolds' St. John's College Prep team will be at Steubenville (OH) in three weeks, in an out-of-state matchup.

Deaysean Rippy came up with a couple big plays on offense and defense, including a sack, helping Sto-Rox to a win in its scrimmage, over Brashear. The Vikings open up against South Allegheny on Friday.

Tyler Alt, a 2012 lineman prospect out of Greensburg Central Catholic, finished with two sacks, seven quarterback hurries and 10 total tackles, in scrimmages against Peabody and Westinghouse, out of the Pittsburgh City League. Greensburg Central Catholic--the defending WPIAL Class AA champion, opens Friday at Waynesburg. Alt will be in attendance at the Michigan-UConn game this Saturday.

Also for Greensburg Central Catholic, quarterback Terrence Stepoli, a 2011 prospect, rushed for 84 yards on just four carries.

John Matarazzo, a 2012 quarterback out of New Castle, threw for 115 yards and one touchdown, along with another rushing touchdown, in a scrimmage against Hampton. New Castle opens Friday in a non-conference game against Butler.

Nolan Harmotto threw two touchdown passes, and running back Rushel Shell ran for a 70-yard touchdown run, as Hopewell scrimmaged Seneca Valley on Friday. Hopewell opens its season at Belle Vernon on Friday.

Keep an eye on Beaver Falls running back Trey Hall. Hall rushed for a two touchdowns in a scrimmage against Ambridge on Friday. Teammate Royce Watson--who camped at Pitt over the summer--hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass in the scrimmage.
