Cooley has done a great job. But the program has to take the next step. Make a run in the NCAA tourney, and get your players into the NBA, which is what the star recruits really want. Then it becomes easier to get the big recruits.
Making a run is all that you need to get recruits in the door. When you make a run you build a brand (See Butler, Gonzaga, etc.)...kids want to play for a brand just as much as they want to get to the league. Its been shown here before that Providence is on par, or actually at the top of the BE schools when it comes to getting kids to the league which proves that either A. it doesnt matter as much as people think (My opinion) or B. the school does a horrible job building a brand around the facts that they get kids to the league just as much as the other BE schools (and many other high majors)...below are the number of players in the league since our magical run of 1987:
