ELITE CAMP VISITORS

Providence hosted its annual Elite Camp on Saturday and along with some familiar names to recruitniks, there were a whole lot of players at the camp who may have been unfamiliar to most.

Part of hosting an elite camp is that it has use as a recruiting tool. But there are other advantages as well. Relationships with high school and prep coaches are built through familiarity. In addition, Providence coaches get a look at lots of talent within its own backyard, and many times a player who has flown under the radar uses the opportunity to make an impression.

The vast majority of players at PC’s Elite Camp hailed from the New England region, with a few players from New York and New Jersey sprinkled in. As in every camp like this, most of the players will never sniff a major Division I offer, but plenty will end up dotting the rosters of Division II and Division III rosters when their high school eligibility runs out.

This edition of the camp featured 14 players from the Class of 2016, 21 players from the Class of 2017, 20 players from the Class of 2018 and 4 players from the Class of 2019. An additional 13 players attended but were not identified by class year on the roster. As always, the camp provided an opportunity to begin building relationships with some of New England’s top future talent.

Unquestionably, the stars this year were Sedee Keita and Wabissa Bede, but overall, the camp lacked its usual star power. In fact, only three players attended who were 6'9 or taller. But that doesn't mean that some of the underclassmen might not develop over the next few years and become stars.

Below is a list of the players that were present for this edition of the Elite Camp. What will be interesting to watch will be to see which players, over the next year or two, especially in the 2018 class, emerge as legitimate Providence targets. For example, Cole Swider '18 from St. Andrew's ran with the big boys and looked like a long range marksman worth keeping an eye on.
