Petro's Program Notes & Whispers

Dan Petronella is a long-time observer of Providence College basketball, and a well-respected expert in the circles of college basketball recruiting. This is his first piece for the new Friar Insider, and he focuses in on several guard prospects that the Friars are pursuing.

Welcome fellow Friar Fans to the brand, spanking new Friar Insider..... A big THANKS to Richard Coren, Steve Hartnett, etal for the outstanding job getting this site up and running..... I'm glad to be back from my early retirement to hopefully provide recruiting and other news about the program to all PC fans..... I will periodically do a note piece.... and I will be resurrecting the Recruiting Notebook in a few weeks with the 2006 class.

Let's begin with recruits for 2005... at least those that I know about, and whose names have become public knowledge.... The coaches have spent many hours over the last few months searching for players that can help next season..... When Jujuan Robinson left school even before the season started, a scholarship opened up.... Then Gerald Brown was injured, and because of personal reasons, he too left school..... Now there are two additional 'ships available to add to LOI signees Jonathan Kale, Weymini Efejuku and Quentin Hosely....... The backcourt has been singled out as the first target.......

Players that are receiving the most attention from the staff include true PG, 6' Chris Lowe from highly touted Mt. Vernon HS in NY..... Chris tells us that his favorites are Providence, St. John's, Temple, UTEP and Virginia Tech.... all have offered...... A recent addition to the list is another 6' true PG from Mater Dei HS in Santa Ana HS in California by the name of Mike Gerrity.... Mike had started for the West Coast powerhouse for three years...... at a recent tournament, Gerrity was singled out by scouts with quotes like "Gerrity had the best performance of any of the point guards we saw all day long"....... "as soon as the ball was inbounded, Mike split the gaps and hit the floor like a flash of light. There was not one player who could stay in front and keep him off path. Every time he came down the court, Gerrity created opportunities not only for himself, but his teammates as well."... Providence, St. John's and USC are the leaders.......

Another is a 6' true PG from Plainfield, NJ by the name of Marquis Jones...... A four year starter at Plainfield, Jones is also being considered by Rutgers, Clemson and St. Joe's.... who is said to be the leader..... Paul Gause, another guard from New Jersey..... and with a 32 ppg average is the state's leading scorer.... had drawn attention from the Friars, Maryland, Georgia and South Carolina..... The explosive scorer played both football and basketball at Schalick HS......

Wing guards include another football/basketball athlete, Geoff McDermott from New Rochelle, NY.... Geoff still has not officially decided on which sport he will play in college, but as time goes by, it looks like the hardwood may have an edge over the gridiron.... McDermott is in blowup mode and is being considered by Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Ohio State and South Florida, as well as Providence.... Geoff stands 6-5 and weighs 215 pounds..... PC coaches have traveled to North Carolina to take a look at Zygis Sestokas, a Lithuanian, 6-5, 190 pound wing guard from Statesville Christian HS....... In a recent North Carolina HS game, Zygis had 76 points 11 rebounds and 6 assists in 30 minutes of play...... Saiquon Stone, a 6-5, 200 pound combo guard/swingman is from Xaverian HS in Brooklyn is another senior being looked at by the Friars........ Stone brings a good deal of versatility and flexibility to the floor..... He is a very capable ball handler with good vision..... a slasher who has the strength to absorb contact..... and he brings good size to either guard spot and is a pesky defender.....

Paul Johnson is another wing player who hails from Gonzaga College Prep in Washington, DC..... Paul is 6-6 and 190 pounds.... He has a long list which includes, Penn State, Wake Forest, Marquette, SMU, Baylor, Georgetown, Drexel and Providence..... The Friars are also involved with Daye Kaba, a 6-4 190 pound point/combo guard who recently arrived in Long Island from his native France..... Daye is playing at Our Savior New American HS in Centereach and has cultivated a buzz for himself.... Pitt, St. John's and Richmond have shown the most interest thus far, but Providence, along with Purdue, Arizona State, Baylor, Texas A & M, Rutgers and Boston College are all showing interest..... And, oh yes.... there is that rumor that we are very close to an unnamed Florida PG.... That remains up in the air at this time....

The spring signing period starts on April 10th..... Time is flying... I'm going to predict a verbal in three weeks.... BTW, let me bring this to a close by saying it looks to be very, very close that the Friars will have another R. Sanders in the lineup come 2007.

I will be back in a couple of weeks with more Friar notes.... Stay tuned.
