PETRO'S PROGRAM NOTES & WHISPERS II

My first article for the new Friar Insider talked about some of the senior guards the Friars are involved with for 2005........ In this article, I will add the names of a few more seniors who have been publicly connected with Providence College.... as the Friars will have some scholarships available in the Spring signing period....

I will start with two very familiar names to Friar fans....... one was thought to be our very first recruit for 2003.... he never committed to Providence... or anyone else, for that matter...... went to a couple of prep schools, and now is ready to qualify.... and guess who has reappeared on his list?...... The other player actually did commit to Providence.... In fact he signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Friars in this, the 2004 season.... He did not qualify and has attended at least a half dozen high schools and prep schools in search of that degree.....

Of course, we all know that I speak of Anthony Ivory..... Anthony maybe has found the road to a Division 1 program..... A couple of months ago he enrolled at a Mississippi school by the name of Genesis Christian Academy..... and it looks like he will make it this time...... Scout.com says that Anthony is a huge presence inside, but he will always need to lose weight.... but get him the ball on the blocks and he will be efficient..... He gets things done..... Who knows?..... L'il Anthony may yet be a Friar.......

Jerome Johnson, the first player that I mentioned is about to reach qualification from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA..... 6-8 and 225 ponds, Johnson will start visiting schools once his season comes to an end..... With an expanded range to 15 feet, Jerome is no longer considered to be "mechanical"....... Averaging 16 points and 9 rebounds per game for Hargrave, Johnson has developed a couple of go-to moves in the post this season..... He has already visited Penn State and Florida State...... Providence, Miami and Oregon have been calling regularly........

Earlier this year, a combo forward from Los Angeles, by the name of Lamar Roberson committed to Louisville...... but the Cardinals are no longer an option.... Playing this year at Mt. Zion Academy in Durham, NC, Lamar is averaging about 14 points, nine rebounds and 9 blocks per game..... The 6-7, 210 pounder currently favors Purdue, but he is also very involved with Georgetown, LaSalle, Houston, Memphis, UNLV and Providence..... LaSalle, Houston and Purdue have offered, but Roberson still has some work to do in the classroom......

Another guard is a 6-4 senior from Flushing, NY by the name of Vernon Teel...... Teel has bettered the 50 point mark on three occasions this season, eclipsing the 1000 point mark and becoming Flushing's all time leading scorer...... Right now, Providence College and West Virginia are showing the most interest........

Rumors from River Avenue..... and beyond......

I am hearing that a current ACC Head Coach may find himself back in the Northeast next season..... and speculation has it that another head coach with Providence ties will be his replacement...... Recruiting wise, the Friars will at least take a look at Junior College players for 2005..... a member of the staff will attend the National JC Championships, which will be held in the next week or two....... I am hearing that the Providence College Administration, through the Admissions Office, is causing the staff some problems with a player that we are recruiting..... This isn't the first time this has happened in the last few years....... I am hearing that the father of a highly recruited young man wants him to come to Providence..... That may, or may not, be a help to the coaches.... The father of a current Big East player.... also wanted his son to be a Friar...but junior now is elsewhere.

Stay tuned...... I will be back shortly.... and the 2006 Recruiting Notebook will be up soon.
