Things change rapidly in the recruiting world - especially in the spring signing period. Changes occur on a daily basis, and Dan Petronella takes a quick look at the rapidly changing world of Friar recruiting.

We are a week into the Spring signing period.... we have signed our main target in Geoff McDermott, and it looks like we should get Sharaud Curry's signature on the dotted line soon.

Why hasn't Curry already signed? Everyone is asking that question in the aftermath of McDermott commitment coming just one day after his playing in the Jamfest held at PC. Let me tell you what I am hearing..... Sharaud wants to commit and sign with the Friars... he had a great time and loves the school and the coaching staff...... His high school coach wants him to visit one more school..... any school... .just to make a comparison with Providence....... He feels that the young man should not make a rash decision based on just one visit...... The staff obviously wants that verbal ASAP, but it looks like Curry might visit Purdue despite the fact that they signed a JUCO PG on Tuesday.

Assume that the Friars win out for Curry's services..... I am hearing that the third scholarship will be given to the best player available, regardless of position...... I believe that the player will come from a list that includes Saiquon Stone, Vernon Teel, Noel Willmore, and that unknown big man who we assume is Frane Markusovic, a 6‚10, mid-200s center from Croatia and now at Kent School (CT),..... This should all happen in the next two weeks. In the meantime, the staff is on the road, mostly visiting underclassmen.

On the "Who's going to be the new assistant coach" topic, I am now hearing that Tim Welsh is in no rush to fill the spot....... On another topic, I want to congratulate Amaury Fermin, a 17 year old senior from JFK High School in the Bronx for being named PSAL player of the year for the city of New York..... Fermin will probably attend a prep school next season.

I am preparing the 2006 Recruiting Notebook and should have it ready by the time the signing period for 2005 ends in mid May.

Go Friars!
