Robinson right at home with Purdue

Lake Central (Ind.) High School product Gelen Robinson visited Purdue for its basketball game with Michigan, joining his father, former Boilermaker basketball star Glenn Robinson. The junior defensive end felt right at home in West Lafayette.

Visiting the Purdue football program, junior defensive end Gelen Robinson felt right at home.

Look to the Mackey Arena rafters and there's a banner honoring his father, former Purdue and NBA great Glenn Robinson. Battling the Boilermakers on Wednesday night was his older brother, Glenn Robinson III.

"It was just great to be around that environment," the Lake Central (Ind.) standout said.

Upon arriving at Mackey Arena, Robinson joined the host of football recruits in attendance, being welcomed in by new head coach Darrell Hazell.

In their first meeting, Hazell and the Purdue coaches made a strong impression on Robinson.

"I think it's a really impressive staff," Robinson said. "I like their head coach, Coach Hazel. He's a really respectable guy. I think he's going to bring this program back."

Robinson got a strong sense for what made Hazell the right candidate for Purdue, and believes in what is being built.

"It was just his personality," said Robinson of Hazell. "I can just tell he's a great guy and is going to do a good job with whatever he does. It seems like a lot of his players like him, and they have a great bond. I think he's going to fit right in."

Later on in the visit, Robinson moved to sit with his father, joined by former Purdue star Brian Cardinal. The two famous former Boilermakers drew many adoring fans and autograph seekers in their Mackey Arena visit.

"It was pretty cool," Robinson said. "I liked it because we got to meet a lot of people there—fans that had been to school with my dad."

While the name Robinson means a great deal at Purdue, it's something Gelen is putting aside in his recruitment. Gelen wants it to be his own decision.

"I try to keep I separate, because I try to keep an open mind when picking a place go," he said. "I want to pick the best place for me."

Robinson currently holds offers from Purdue, Illinois and Minnesota. He has also received interest from Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State and others. He has no timetable for his recruitment.

"I'm not sure exactly when I'm going to make my decision," he said. "I'll know when the time is right for me, I'll wait it out and see what happens."
