Purdue legacy on Boilers' radar

Freshman center Barrett Benson is the son of two Purdue graduates, but the family background won't weigh into his college recruitment. Benson speaks with Boiler Sports Report about his young recruitment and more.

Barrett Benson knows all about the Boilermakers. The son of two Purdue graduates, a walk down the hallway of his home can have the feel of a recruiting pitch.

Now, the freshman center is readying for his own college choice. The decision itself is still years down the road, but Benson is hearing from several schools already. Boston College, Dayton, DePaul, Indiana and Michigan have already come calling. Oh, and so had Purdue, too.

"It's just where my parents went," said Benson of Purdue. "It won't decide where I go in the future."

The Boilermakers have already begun to show attention in the Hinsdale, Ill. native. The interest is mutual, though not just because his parents attended school there.

"Coach Painter is a great coach, and I think the program is up and coming—getting back to the time where they were really good," said Benson of the Boilermakers. "I love the campus there and West Lafayette is a really nice town."

The AAU circuit could bring scholarship offers in for Benson, whose recruitment is just beginning to take shape. Benson had a solid showing in Fort Wayne for the Spiece Run-N-Slam Classic tournament. Playing with the loaded Illinois Wolves 15U team, he'll continue to gain notoriety as the summer progresses.

Benson has lofty personal goals as he works to build a profile. He hopes college coaches take notice of his efforts.

"I just want to be known as a great player, one of the top big men in the country," he said. "I want to get my name out there and for people to see how I play."
