Notes: A high-energy go

Purdue practiced with good energy on Wednesday, preparing for the season-opener against Cincinnati. Boiler Sports Report offers notes and quotes from the practice field in West Lafayette.

-- Purdue's practice effort from Tuesday to Wednesday changed night and day. Coach Darrell Hazell liked what the Boilermakers brought to the outdoor practice field on Wednesday afternoon. "I don't know why we didn't practice this well energy-wise yesterday. It may have been school or whatever. But [Wednesday's effort] is the way we need to practice."

-- The Boilermakers received some good news on Wednesday, when junior linebacker Joe Gillian returned to the practice field for the first time in camp. Gilliam had his left little finger injury repaired. He had a pin removed from the finger today and was limited in practice. Hazell says that Gilliam is still "day-to-day" and couldn't assess his chances to play in the opener against Cincinnati.

-- With Gilliam sidelined, Will Lucas moved from the outside to the inside and has seen plenty of playing time at the ‘Mike' position. Redshirt freshman Jimmy Herman has rotated in, too. It's also worth noting that sophomore Armstead Williams has jumped ahead of Andy James Garcia at the ‘Will' linebacker spot and is in position to start.

-- Senior linebacker Sean Robinson has worked in at each outside linebacker spot. Robinson commented on the Boilermakers' injury issues at linebacker. "You need to make due with whatever situation it is, no matter who's playing," he said.

-- Senior Devin Smith—the expected starter at left guard—remains sidelined with an injury. As a result, Jason King has worked in with the ones. If Smith is forced to miss time, it will be King with the starting offense.

-- Coach Hazell said after practice that he anticipates a rotation on the offensive line, even using the term "line change" at one point. Hazell also said that Trevor Foy is a bit ahead of Jordan Roos for playing time at right guard, but it's very likely that both will be in action for the first game.

-- It looks likely that sophomore Ryan Watson will see the majority of snaps next to Bruce Gaston in the middle of Purdue's defensive line. However, Ryan Isaac will surely work into the rotation, too. On the ends, Ryan Russell and Greg Latta appear very comfortable with their starting roles.

-- During 7-on-7 drills, freshman receiver Jordan Woods matched up with senior cornerback Ricardo Allen. On the route, it appeared Woods made a mistake in pursuing the pass. Allen, the senior leader, pulled Woods aside and reviewed the route and his mistake.

-- The play of the day came from senior running back Akeem Hunt, but it wasn't a running play. Streaking down the sidelines for an Austin Appleby pass, Henry made an impressive diving catch to haul in the 20-plus-yard reception.

-- The Boilermakers return to the practice field on Thursday afternoon to continue preparing for Cincinnati. The Hazell era kicks off in just 10 days.
