Recruiting Roundup: Denzel, Drue visiting

Purdue will host many targets, including Drue Tranquill and Denzel Ward. Boiler Sports Report offers the latest in Boilermaker football recruiting.

Denzel, Drue coming to town

Technically speaking, Denzel Ward and Drue Tranquill are still verbal commits to Purdue. But both are exploring other options, making their visit on Saturday very important.

Ward is looking at offers from Florida and UCLA, while Tranquill is exploring an offer from Notre Dame as an option. Both are looking to solidify that Purdue is the best fit, so the Boilermakers have to a lot to prove on these visits.

The good news for coach Darrell Hazell is that Ross-Ade Stadium will be electric for this game. The arch rival Fighting Irish will provide a fun matchup for the Boilermakers. And there will be many other recruits around. There should be a lot of excitement for Ward and Tranquill to take in. A win wouldn't hurt, too.

Purdue hosts junior receiver

Keep an eye on local receiver Grant Weatherford, who's just a junior. He has long been receiving local interest, but now, he's attracting interest from around the Midwest. Purdue is upping its interest in the intriguing prospect, hosting him on campus for the win over Indiana State.

"I really liked it," Weatherford said to Scout's Allen Trieu. "I liked how, even though it wasn't a huge game like Purdue-Indiana or Purdue-Notre Dame, they still had a really good turnout of fans. It shows they really care about the team. The atmosphere was great. I talked to a bunch of other people and they told me nothing but good things about Purdue and the coaches were good to talk to."

Purdue was wise to gain an early edge in recruiting Weatherford, and an offer is possible to come down the road.

Jackson visits West Lafayette

The name Ashton Jackson continues to rise up Purdue's recruiting board. The Trotwood-Madison (OH) running back has become a priority prospect for the Boilermakers' 2014 class.

Jackson took an official visit to West Lafayette for the Boilermakers' win over Indiana State, getting his first look at Purdue's campus. It could be conceived before the visit that Purdue was the favorite to land Jackson. After the visit, I'd be surprised if that changes.

Jackson is a solid runner with quick feet, a real playmaker in his team's offense. A decision is expected in the coming weeks, which could bring good news for Purdue.

Extra point

Purdue will host a slew of its top targets for Saturday's contest with Notre Dame. This week, Boiler Sports Report will provide a full list of the top visitors coming to campus.
