Big Ben

Everyone from coast to coast has heard of his teammate - but Ben Bredthauer is turning heads in his own right with an ideal college frame and skills package. We caught up with Ben recently to see if the talented TE prospect is close to a college decision ...

Who's the best TE prospect in the city of Houston? Well there are several this year who've already made names for themselves – and one outstanding player who's size, speed, and stats will be putting his name in that group soon. You already know his teammate Andrew Luck. And just like Joe Montana had Dwight Clark, and Troy Aikman had Jay Novacek, Luck has a favorite and reliable target of his own. Who is that TE who's going to make some college coach happy come signing day? - Stratford's Ben Bredthauer.

I caught up with Ben last week before Stratford's game with Spring High School to see how his season and recruiting are going. Ben told me he was playing H-back in the Spartan's offense and that the season was going pretty good. I asked him how recruiting was going and he told me things were a little quiet so far. Here's the run down on this super prospect that has the ideal frame to grow into a fine college TE...

So Ben where do you stand with making a commitment right now?

"I'm pretty open right now. I went to camps this past summer at A&M, the Oklahoma State camp here at Delmar (Houston), and Northwestern. I went to a Rice camp last summer in 2006."

Who is recruiting you and who are your favorites?

"I‘m getting recruited by Rice, Texas A&M, Kansas, Okla. St., Louisiana Tech, and Northwestern. My favorites are probably Texas A&M and Rice. I'd love to go to Rice so my parents could see me play every week. Actually I'd like to play anywhere in the South."

How can a guy with your size fly under the recruiting radar so far?

"I played Outside Linebacker last year so a lot of schools don't know about me as an offensive player yet. The 7-on-7 Tournament this summer was good experience for me though. I did pretty well, I caught like 15 touchdowns at the state tournament and then we got to go to the National 7-on-7 out in LA. It was a real cool experience. Our first game against Cy-Fair was real big too being on national TV and all."

So what is it like playing with one of the best quarterbacks in the nation in Andrew Luck?

"We've known each other since the 7th grade so we've kind of grown up together. We've always thrown the football a lot and hung out together since we were kids."

So did Andrew strongly consider Rice?

"Yeah, he really did. He was serious about them – they were in his Final 3"

I'm sure you get asked about Andrew all the time, so let's get back to talking about you Ben. Do you have any visits lined up yet?

"No sir, not yet. Most of the coaches recruiting me have said they wanted to see film and see how my season is going. A few have talked about setting up visits but I haven't scheduled anything yet."

Do you have a time frame for making a commitment?

"Not really. I plan on taking some trips and then maybe deciding later in the season."

Where are coaches projecting you to play in college?

"I play H-back in Stratford's offense so probably TE. I catch the ball a lot but I can block too. Our second game I only had a couple catches, but I was the lead blocker for our running back who had a big game. I also deep snap. I'll play wherever they tell me to, really"
