Rice Lands TE/DE Commitment!

Rice added another commitment to the 2008 recruiting class when they snatched up TE/DE prospect Jared Williams, hailing from Huntsville. Checking in at 6-2.5, 225 pounds and clocking forty times in the 4.7-range, Williams told OwlDigest.com why he opted for the Rice Owls, electing to end the suspense early. That and more below!

Jared Williams of Huntsville pulled the commitment trigger in favor of Rice awhile back but his verbal stayed relatively quiet until OwlDigest.com did a little digging, catching up with the TE/DE prospect last night to get the inside scoop straight from Williams himself…

"I committed before the start of the season because I thought it would be a good idea to get it out of the way," Williams told OwlDigest.com. "Plus, the Rice coaches seemed to be really interested in me."

According to the 6-2.5, 225-pound TE/DE prospect Owl CB coach Jason Washington asked Williams to make sure of his commitment to them because they did not want any soft, only solid, verbals.

"I like the academics, it's close to home and I get along real well with Coach Washington so I chose to end the suspense, committing back in the summer," Williams said.

"Coach Washington," Williams continued, "Is cool, real energetic and enthusiastic. He checks in with me regularly and is a real cool guy. He always talks to my mom too. I think they talk more than we do."

Never hurts one bit to be in good with mom does it?

"No sir," Williams chuckling said, "Coach Washington's got her. He's got her pretty good."

And Rice has got it good with the talented Huntsville senior pledging to become an Owl come Signing Day, 2008. Let's take a look at his stat packages below…

JR Season Stat Package: "9 catches, 123 yards, 1 TD, 17-20 pancake blocks, no sacks allowed (I haven't allowed a sack since I was a sophomore), 1 or 2 holding penalties, 2 false start penalties."

SR Season Stats(@TE): "In six games I have 18 receptions, 306 yards, 3 TDs, no sacks allowed, one holding penalty and no false start penalties."

SR Season Stats(@DE): "(As situational pass rusher, logging about 5-10 snaps a game at DE) I have 6 tackles, 4 solo."

Other Notes/Number to Consider…

Weight Room Numbers: "285 Bench, 360 Squat, 260 Power Clean."

Academics: "I have a 4.91 GPA (on a 5.8 scale); 1160 SAT (Math/Reading)."

Other Schools Chasing: "Louisiana Lafayette offered and call often and TCU has been by recently and started recruiting me but have yet to offer. And even if they did, I'm keeping my word to Coach Washington. I'm going to Rice.
