Turner Still Interested in Rice

The Owls are looking for more speed in their backfield - is one of Houston's quickest players still an option for Rice? Shane Turner tells us where he stands with the Owls...

After a breakout junior season that nearly saw his team win the state championship, Cy-Falls' Shane Turner should have had a pile of offers heading into his senior season. That didn't exactly happen but now the offers are rolling in for Turner. He has at least 7 in hand at this point.

Among those is an offer from the hometown Rice Owls.

Turner has seen his stock steadily rise this season. He arguably had the better head to head performance when Cy-Falls beat Sam McGuffie's Cy-Fair Bobcats on national television last fall. The offers have been pouring in every since. Turner has offers from Utah, Fresno State, Rice, Northwestern, Arizona, New Mexico State, and Boston College.

I asked Turner about his visit plans and he had this to say, "I've got several offical visits lined up in January - I'm going to Fresno State this weekend. Then I go to Boston College on the 18th, and Northwestern on the 25th."

I also asked Turner about his favorites and he said, "Right now it's Fresno and Boston College. I have a brother who lives in San Diego so it would be cool to be closer to him, but I'm going to take my visits and see what happens."

So where does that leave Rice? Honestly, with a lot of ground to make up. Turner told me his visit to Rice would be an unofficial one, despite Coach Craig Naivar's wish that he take an official to Rice.

"Coach Naivar told me there was a lot of stuff I couldn't do on an unofficial visit but since Rice is just across town I didn't want to use an official visit for that. I want to take some trips so I'm using the official visits for that. When he gets back from the coaching convention and the dead period is over I'm still going to set something up with him to see what Rice has to offer."
