I spoke with Jared Williams Thursday night, only minutes after Coach Jason Washington was at his house for a visit.
So tell me about your commitment to Rice and what's been going on since football season ended?
"I'm firmly committed to Rice and looking forward to getting on campus. I've talked to Coach Washington on a regular basis for over a year - in fact he was just here when you called. Right now I just started track, I throw the discus. I'm doing the running workouts too though to improve my speed."
What's your personal best in the discus?
"I threw 155' last year and just missed regionals. Actually it was (Freshman Rice OL) Jake Hicks from Montgomery that edged me out. I'm the top rated thrower in district this year so I want to make regionals."
How big are you right now Jared?
"I'm 6-3 225 right now. The coaches want me to come in at about 230 to 235. I've run a 4.68 in the forty."
Have they talked to you about what position you will play at Rice?
"Yes sir, I could play Tight End or Defensive End. I probably like Tight End a little more because that's the position I've played mostly."
What led to your chosing Rice as your college of choice?
"I liked the coaches a lot. I actually met Coach Bailiff when he was at Texas State. The coaches have all been real honest with me. I like the players at Rice and the fact that it's close to home. Mostly though, the education I receive at Rice will prepare me for success after college."
Rice put up big numbers on offense this year. What do think about their scheme?"
"They throw the ball a lot so of course I like that. I also like that their blocking schemes are similar to what we did on my high school team."
What other colleges did you consider?
What do you think about the program the Rice staff is building?
"It's exciting. I think we're getting some really good players in this class. I took my official visit the weekend of December 1 and roomed with Jarrett Ben. Xavier Webb, Clay Hebert was there that weekend and so was this big lineman from Canada (Stefan Nazar) - he was huge. I just kept staring at the guy, I couldn't believe how big he was. We hung out with Aaron Williams, Willie Garley, JaCorey Shepherd, and another Canadian (Scott Mitchell). The players were all honest with us. They told us the bad with the good - I liked the fact that they were completely honest with us."
When will you report to campus?
"I graduate June the 7th so probably the 14th or something like that. Coach Washington was just talking to me about that."
Did you receive any honors this past season?
"I got 2nd Team All-District TE. I thought I should have got 1st Team because the player they put on 1st Team was really a Wide Receiver. He's a good player but I think he got put there because their coach had a bunch of votes. I've also been invited to play in the Space City Classic All Star Game. I think Xavier (Webb) is going to play in it too."
So you and Xavier have become good friends?
"Actually Xavier and I have known each other for about 10 years. We played Little League baseball together. We'll probably room together at Rice."
Like every Rice commit I've talked to Jared was just a great young man to talk to. He's another outstanding prospect in a class loaded with them.
Welcome to Rice Jared!
