I asked him what he was looking for in the college he would ultimately attend. "I'd like to go to a school where I fit in. I want to get along well with the coaches and the players. I also want to go to a school that will prepare me for my post graduate studies - I want to pursue dentistry. The school doesn't necessarily have to have a pre-dentistry program but I'm looking for a strong academic program."
Does Rice fit the criteria above?
"I was really surpised at how good everything was. The visit was about 20 times better than I could have hoped for. I really clicked with everyone there and my parents really enjoyed the trip too. They were very impressed"
"Right now it's really down to Rice and Kansas. The coach from Kansas will be coming up here tomorrow for an in home visit to discuss whether they will have any room for me. They don't know right now, I might have to walk-on for a semester before a scholarship became available. I'll know more after his visit."
So when do you think you'll be ready to commit?
"I'd say Rice is the leader right now. I'm following my instincts - I'll make a commitment when I feel like it's the right time."
Here's hoping that time will come soon for the Owls. To say Rice covets Martens' punting and kickoff prowess is an understatement. The Owls depth chart at punter is up for grabs and Martens would be the leading contender for the starting punter's job the minute he set foot on campus. And would do so with the knowledge that he's on scholarship at one of the finest academic universities in the country.
So, to the future Dr. Martens - come on down, we've got a place just for you!
