San Antonio LB Gives Rice High Marks

One of many recruits to take in Saturday's Junior Day, Helotes LB Jarek Lancaster gives us his thoughts...

Rice hosted several of the state's top football recruits Saturday on the Rice Campus at its "Junior Day". The recruits were treated to an orientation of both the Rice campus and its football program during the 6 hour visit. The day was capped off in style by an intra-squad scrimmage between Blue and Gray teams with the game itself being a display of fireworks ending with Tommy Henderson's decisive score on the final play. All in all it was an exciting finish to an exciting day for Rice and its visitors. Helotes O'Connor LB Jarek Lancaster was one of many who attended with his parents and gave the Owls high marks for the visit.

"My parents and I had an outstanding trip to Rice yesterday. I was very impressed with what Rice is trying to do. I want to be a part of that. Rice seems to be a perfect fit for me both academically and athletically. There are way too may things I liked about the school to list."

Rice is looking to sign a pair of linebackers in the 2009 class and Lancaster is an early target. He was named 1st Team All-District 28-5A last year and also picked up All Region honors for Coach Danny Padron's at Helotes O'Connor Panthers, just outside San Antonio.

While Jarek liked what he saw, his mother may have liked it even more. "My Mom said she would have picked this school without the football. NO FOOTBALL! She's my Mom." Jarek added,"I saw the players, watched the coaches, listened to the way they coached and it felt right. My parents say why go anywhere else, but realistically they know I have to keep all my options open."

While Jarek is high on the radar of Rice coaches the staff is evaluating offers at this point. While many have been extended by other schools Rice will be very calculated with offers until combine, academic, and summer camp evaluations have been completed.

Lancaster would seem to fit the mold of what many college programs are looking for in linebackers. He has speed - 4.53 in the 40 (also runs the 300m hurdles); agility - 4.22 in the shuttle; explosiveness - 34" vertical; and a frame that will hold another 25-30 pounds. Lancaster is currently 6-2 205. He's got good bloodlines as well, his uncle Sacha Lancaster, played for the Arkansas Razorbacks and in the CFL. Jarek is looking to major in Pre-Med, Pre-Law, Engineering and has already scored an 1100 on his SAT. He maintains a 3.9 g.p.a. and is ranked in the top 10% of his class.

While things seem to be matching up well for Rice and Jarek, he isn't ready to make a decision just yet. He's receiving mail from Stanford, Vanderbilt, Baylor, SMU, UTEP, and Illinois and will likely visit Baylor, SMU, and possibly Stanford in the coming weeks.

We'll stay in touch with Jarek as his recruitment continues - here's a look at his stats from last year:
