It wasn't hard for Coaches Miller and Jason Washington to find Kilgore. Miller coached at Kilgore High for two seasons and Washington recruits East Texas for Rice. In fact, Kilgore is a regular stop for him. "Kilgore always seems to have a Division I athlete or two," Coach Washington told me recently.
Obviously Rice likes Cano, but what does he think about Rice?
"I went down to Rice for their Junior Day and the campus was real nice. I have an offer from them and like them a lot."
Cano is in no hurry to make a final decision though. He's got a lot of schools looking at him and currently holds offers from Rice, SMU, McNeese St., and Louisiana Tech. He's hearing from Baylor and Ole Miss also.
"OU called my school the other day to ask about me."
Cano plans on attending camps at Rice, Baylor and Ole Miss this summer. "I've always kind of liked Baylor so I want to go to their camp. Ole Miss has been calling too and I want to check out football in the SEC."
The 6-2 280 pound Cano runs a 5.1 forty yard dash and boasts impressive lower body strength. "I've got a 325 bench and I squat 575. My shuttle time is around a 4.6."
His size and strength give him the versatility to possibly play on defense in college. For now it's the offensive line though. "I like playing offense - I'd say that's my first choice."
Asked about when he might make a decision Cano said he plans on taking in some camps and "might make a decision before two-a-days."
I asked Vincent what he was looking for in a school and like so many other Rice recruits he mentioned education first, but also has some other definite criteria. "I'd like to play for a coach that has NFL experience. Somebody that will push me to be a better player."
I think I know of a Coach, last name Miller, who is very qualified for the job...
